Every Little Thing

Every Little Thing, by Payton Cosell Turner, is filled with intricate designs that adults will find both stimulating and satisfying. It is loaded with 80’s inspired drawings with kaleidoscope-like patterns of animals and nature. It’s like coloring wallpaper.

I’ve enjoyed coloring ever since I was a child. It’s a relaxing, creative, and fun pastime.

Now I don’t have to color princesses, animals, or larger-than-life characters. There are coloring books for adults!

Craftsmanship: The softbound book has a beautiful slipcover with a colorable cover beneath it. The pages are made from thick cardstock, which assures colors won’t bleed or show through to the backside of the page.

Suggestions: Using coloring pencils or gel pens are more practical than crayons, due to the intricate designs.

If you are creative and enjoy coloring and or pen and pencil crafts, you’ll enjoy this art book. I only wish there was less white space on the pages, giving more design to color
! It's a little repetitive but very relaxing. I had a great time coloring and relaxing. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to relax and slow down a bit.

My Pantry

Loved this little cute book! Alice Waters presents her esoteric tastes combined with some common sense ideas. She argues the worth of her diet in terms of environmental responsibility, nutrition, and economy then goes on to make some foods that would likely have a limited appeal.
The recipes and text are both very straightforward- not at ALL fussy!- but complete, and all of them have exciting variations both in making them and in ways to serve them. Almost all of them can be done with minimal kitchen equipment, and they're designed for lasting- I think the shortest-lived ones would last maybe a week, refrigerated, but much last far longer.  I adore Alice Waters….this book is great for those starting out and foodies like myself. She gives a lot of tips on how to have homemade delicious things in and from your pantry. Only Alice Waters could make me read and enjoy a book about what's in her pantry.

2 A.M. at The Cat's Pajamas

As I was reading this book, it reminded me a bit of Love Actually. Not because of any similarities to the story lines of that movie, but more because of a sprawling cast of interconnected characters whose stories weave together around Christmas-time. Unfortunately, I feel like the massive cast works better on film, where you can put a face with a name. It took me half of the Cat's Pajamas just to keep the characters straight, and how they were all interconnected. Although the story takes place over the course of one day--Christmas Eve eve--several of the characters flash back to earlier times, which just adds to the confusion. For awhile, I wasn't even really sure who the story was supposed to be following. So many characters were introduced that it was hard to feel much of a connection to them. However, toward the end of the book it becomes clear who the main characters are and I became more invested in their stories. I found the ending satisfying, but didn't really feel like the magical realism elements added much to the story.

The Homemade Kitchen

What a great book! The Homemade Kitchen by Alana Chernila is a classic cookbook. The recipes are pretty simple. The pictures in the book are beautiful! I love the whole layout of this book.

Start where you are. Feed yourself. Do your best, then let go. Be helpful. Do the work. Slow down. Eat outside. Invite people over. Don't be afraid of food. The author has these quotes on her refrigerator to remind herself of what food really means. She organizes this cookbook in the same way with recipes for each category/quote. There are a lot of really great cooking tips and some really yummy sounding recipes complete with beautiful pictures. I especially like that she encourages home cooks to try new things and not be afraid of failing or having a not-so-great result. I also like that this book promotes making most things from scratch and that it's usually MUCH easier than you think. Overall, I liked it and there are definitely some recipes I want to try.

When I get a cookbook I like to bookmark the recipes I intend to make right away, and in this book there are plenty - but they're all relegated to the first 60% or so of the book. Weirdnesses aside, it's a 4-star book for me, a nice little beam of light in the kitchen. This book is a winner in my kitchen!

The Martian

The book is Andy Weir’s debut novel “The Martian”, which has become a runaway bestseller and has already been optioned for a major motion picture. It is, at least among science geeks and sci-fi nerds (like myself), the literary event of the year. Of course, even among those who don’t necessarily like science or science fiction, it is quickly shaping into a literary phenomenon.

It’s hard to resist. At its heart, “The Martian” is a simple story. Man versus nature. Survival against tremendous odds. A testament to human ingenuity and creativity. It’s about heroism and compassion and intelligence and faith. It’s about all that, but it’s also just a damn good adventure story.
The plot: Mark Watney, a lower-rung astronaut on a mission to Mars, is presumed dead after a sandstorm on the Mars surface forces the six-man crew to abort the mission. They are forced to abandon Watney’s body on Mars. The problem: Watney isn’t dead.

Alone on an entire planet that is uninhabitable and without any means of communicating with Earth, Watney must do some amazingly out-of-the-box thinking. A base camp called the Hab offers air, food, and water for a limited time. The electronic and computer equipment is operational, and there are supplies that will see him through for up to roughly six months.

Thankfully, Watney is an engineer and a botanist. He has calculated a way to extend his stay on Mars for more than a year. And, thankfully, another Mars mission is planned to arrive within that time frame. He just needs to find a way to survive until then, at which point he will, hopefully, get rescued.

In the meantime, Watney must endure loneliness, tight quarters, and eating nothing but potatoes. Unfortunately, the only entertainment he has is a an iPod downloaded with bad 70s TV shows and disco.

Throughout the book are the creative---and scientifically accurate---ways in which Watney tries to stay alive. Told primarily through log entries, Watney’s story is fascinating and suspenseful. He also doesn’t suffer the depression and horror of his situation thanks to a warped sense of humor and a heightened optimism. Even when the reader has the sneaking suspicion that everything he is doing may be for naught, Watney keeps calm and carries on.

When a NASA scientist observing live satellite feeds of the Mars surface accidentally discovers that Watney is alive, it creates a world-wide campaign to save him.

The phrases “riveting”, “edge-of-your-seat”, and “un-put-down-able” have been used to describe this book, and, indeed, they are extremely apropos. I haven’t read a book this exciting in years. It puts authors like Lee Child and Stephen King to shame.

Most of all, though, the book is a tribute to Science and an illustration of how science and technology---when used benevolently---could be our salvation

Loved this book!!!

What Color Is Your Parachute? for Teens.

I really liked this book.  The book is a great resource. It is very dense, so young people should take their time reading and be very thoughtful and reflective while reading. This is an excellent workbook for teenagers and young adults who are "finding themselves" on their path to employment. Definitely a must-read for people who aren't sure what do to when it comes to choosing a career. I will give this book to my kids when they are old enough to read it. I like how the book gives you ideas and guides on ideas for you. Very helpful.

I'm Happy For You (Sort Of.. Not Really)

What a great book. Do you compare yourself to other people? Like, facebooke, instagram, twitter, pinterest? Author Kay Wills Wyma takes on our constant need to compare ourselves and how this holds us back. Kay tackles the comparison culture issue with personal stories, humor, and candor. Kay has given our family the courage to admit we have a self-inflicted problem but more importantly, she gave us the tools and steps to put an end to the joy-sucking madness.

I loved the humor in this book! Its such a great reminder about how we compare ourselves to others. And to take a step back and not do it.. I would recommend this book to everyone for sure!!

Milk Bar

What a great cookbook!! There is some great information in this book that can inspire a non baker or an experienced one. The photos are really cool and the pages are nice and glossy so you can get crap on it and just wipe it off. The detail and description are great; every recipe has ingredients in both grams/ounces and teaspoons/cups so you never have to convert. She even goes into great detail about every ingredient she uses and what companies make the best chocolate or cake flour-or whatever it may be- for her recipes. The anecdotes and little pointers and tips along the way make this not only a great cook book but also a great book to sit down and read and dream and then go spend tons of money at the grocery store. I suggest that. Definitely get this book and buy two copies because once you get into it you'll want to share the awesome with your friends.

The Maple Pecan Cookies were super easy and delish!!! The Mango Drink was a great pick-me-up! And the Pumpkin Gooey Butter Cake was to die for!! The Lemon Bars were super easy and the best Lemon bars I have ever made.

My daughter loved the Craft Night Sleep-Over section in the book.

I love the simple recipes. The pictures are just beautiful! This is a book I will come back to again and again!!

A Nice LIttle Place On The North Side

This is a fan book. It's a good fan book, and a good book about baseball in general, if you like baseball. I don't love baseball, so with the pages that were heavy with game and player stats, i just couldn't get into it. What I found interesting was the number of people who are famous for not-baseball who were associated very early in their careers (famous and infamous) with Wrigley Park.

The stadium itself is a separate entity from the team that it houses. Making it a Home for baseball no matter how the team does is an act of love from a city dedicated to the game with a team from the origins of the sport.

Interesting information about the Cubs but a bit rambling with lack of focus. Sometimes it seemed like the author's ego got in the way of the story -- but that's George Will for you!

Read this if you love the Cubs, love baseball, or love the love of the game.

The Postage Stamp Vegetable Garden

One of my favorite gardening books. Loads of info for "square foot gardening." Loads of information for gardeners with space limitations. Informative, laid out well, interesting to read. All around great resource. I think this is the perfect book for today's lifestyles. Many people have small yards and busy schedules. A postage stamp garden will not take up much room, you can even go the container route and have it on your patio, it provides lots of produce that will benefit your family's health and save on your grocery bill and it doesn't take near the amount of time or work that a regular size garden takes. This is a great book to have around!!!!!

Lighten up, ya'll  Classic Southern Recipes made Healthy & Wholesome
                                                                                        By: Virginia Wills

I loved this cookbook! Tons of great recipes with some great colorful pictures to go along. I also enjoy how the recipes are wholesome, healthy and light. I enjoy how Virginia takes you back in her time and tells you a story about her growing up along side with the recipes. I love when cookbooks are like that!

We have already make a handful of the recipes in this cookbook. Baked Zucchini Crisps on page (75) were a hit. So was the Makeover Broccoli Mac and Cheese on page (96)

The Biscuits, Breads and Baked Goods chapter was my favorite. The Buttermilk Biscuits were a hit.

The Baked Apple Hand Pies were also a sweet treat hit. They were fun to make. So were the Brown Sugar-Strawberry Shortcakes on page (198)

I would recommend this book to everyone who loves to eat healthy, light and who enjoys cooking wholesome foods. Easy recipes to follow. Beautiful pictures and easy to follow recipes!

It Was Me All Along

This is a memoir of a girl who was fat, became morbidly obese, and then lost weight. I mean lots and lots of weight. You would think her problems would be gone after that, right? Well they weren’t.
Andie Mitchell grew up with an alcoholic brother, a hard-working mother, and brother. Food was always around to comfort her, whether it was a processed snack cake or cupcake, lovingly made by her mother. Eventually her father died, and her brother left for college, so it was just Andie and her mother. As Andie continues through middle school, high school, and college, she gets bigger and bigger. However, she does have close friends and a great social life. When she gets to college, she also starts dating.
She has attempted to lose weight along the way and is sometime successful. When she has the opportunity to spend five months in Italy, she develops a healthier relationship with food and loses over 100 pounds. Yet, when she returns to the U.S. she begins to obsess about what she will eat or how many calories she will burn. It isn’t until then that Andie deals with issues that have been with her for her entire life.
This was a wonderfully written debut piece and I look forward to reading more. The author has a gift for describing every piece of food in the book. It is not surprising she has her own food blog (Canyoustayfordinner.com). I felt like I really got to know her and could see being friends with her. She was that likable!

The 13th Girft

The 13th Gift by Joanne Huist Smith

How do you keep putting one foot in front of the other when the rock of your family has passed away and Christmas is around the corner? Days seem dreary and energy is lacking for Joann and her kids. Their grief is pulling them under and they can't seem to find a way back. Joann wants to just forget about the holidays but the youngest, Megan, seems determined to have a Christmas tree in their house.

On the run to try and get to school on time one morning, they discover a poinsettia plant on their front porch. Along with the plant is a card. The card has a revamped verse for the Twelve Days of Christmas. Angry at everything, Joann just wants to throw it away but Megan saves it and encourages her mom to keep it. The next day, another gift arrives. They all soon become wrapped up in the gifts that arrive each day and whether they will be able to solve the mystery of who is sending them and how they do it without being detected.

This true story is heartwarming and shows how people can do small acts of kindness that can mean much more than they can imagine to the recepients.

I loved this book. A great read for sure!
